East Honolulu

The breathtaking dormant volcanic crater of Diamond Head is located on the southeast coast of Oahu, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Residents enjoy Diamond Head Trail as a popular hiking spot, presenting a moderate, 90-minute trail to a phenomenal view of the entire west side of the island from Waikiki to Koki Head.

Neighborhoods in East Honolulu are as diverse as the terrain. Palolo, also called Palolo Valley, is located in the Diamond Head district of Oahu. Neighboring Kaimuki and Manoa residents enjoy Diamondhead Crater and Sand Island or golfing at one of the nearby country clubs. Kapahulu presents plenty of historic buildings, with businesses with roots back to the territorial days. Storefronts, two-story walkups and the Kapahulu Center date back to 1920, with art deco and modern art styles against Plantation, Tudors, Mission style and Craftsman bungalow style homes. The neighborhood of Kaimuki sits at the foot of Diamond Head, surrounded by Kapahulu, St. Louis Heights, Palolo, Kahala and a short trip to Waikiki. In a subdivision in the Diamond Head region sits Kalani Iki, where residents enjoy the proximity to the family-friendly park of the same name on Maunalua Bay, perfect for picnickers and kayakers. Hawaii Kai is the largest of several communities in East Honolulu.

On the south shore of Oahu, the island is divided into sections by two separate mountain ranges, both running northwest to southeast. The Waianae Range is on the western side of the island, and the Koolau Range lies to the east. The Koolau separates the city of Honolulu from the windward side of the island and the towns of Kailua and Kaneohe. Between the two mountain ranges is a central plain with Pearl Harbor on the south and North Shore on the northern end of the plain.
